Pole Dancing Spins Into Mainstream
Pole dancing is gaining popularity as authentic exercise in health clubs, dance studios and home gyms. Joye Strickland, a certified exercise trainer, operates two pole dancing studios in Dallas and Burleson. Among her students are corporate types, nurses, stay-at-home moms and grandmothers. "When women try it they see that it's not what they thought it was, and they enjoy it," she said. Whether sensual, gymnastic or ballet-like, the dance contributes to cardiovascular health. Pole "tricking" or balancing parts of the body against the pole (imagine the "Fireman Spin") is akin to Pilates' strengthening of the inner core. Added benefits of pole dancing are the confidence and self esteem gained from the expression of one's innate beauty -- from the inside out. Still apprehensive? You can host a private gathering for a one-time try for you and all your friends. Participate in Strickland's pole dancing demonstration at the Visions Womens Expo from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 22 at Dallas Market Hall. Or, you can visit her web site or call 469-826-9354 for more information.
